If I had a dollar for every time someone has said, “You barely did anything… that’s gonna help?” Let’s just say I’d have a sack full. It seems that our culture is anticipating a Moses-like parting of the seas intervention in order to restore the inherent ability of the human body to heal itself. But what science is revealing, with increasing frequency, is human touch is not only powerful in igniting these healing instincts, it is vital in the human experience. Especially touch that is wrapped in LOVE.
Social and interpersonal contact are essential for life. The neurophysiology of human touch stems well beyond conception. Neurophysiologists have been uncovering (so this makes it true) how natural expressions of love and affection actually facilitate the growing and healing functions of the human body.
A neurochemical called OXYTOCIN is a great example. Once thought to play a limited role in childbirth and reproduction, the impacts of this little gem is vast. Brain development, blood vessel formation, growth, emotional attachment and the sequences required to process STRESS. It gives us the sense of bonding and connection with humans. Hugging has been shown to elevate this key chemical in our brain.
As chiropractors focused on removing barriers to the innate healing functions of the body, we have observed the power of touch for decades. A hug, a pat on the back, a kiss on the cheek – all expressions of love and affection for a fellow human – are great stimulators of oxytocin. Combine this with specific, gentle chiropractic adjustments designed to remove interference and ignite the healing process and miracles happen.
So the next time you feel that deep feeling suggesting the person you are with could really use a hug, trust that intuition and hug away. Let them know that you just wanted to help their brain release a bit of OXYTOCIN.
